Letters From The Past

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 (ESV)
Today—January 27, 2026–my mother handed me something she had found around their house. She said, “I know you’re always asking me for things your grandfather wrote down; I found this today.” She then handed me a small piece of paper—maybe 2x5 inches—with this writing on it:
—————————
DON’T JUDGE TOO QUICKLY
SEEK GOD’S WILL
TRUST GOD’S GUIDANCE
RESPOND IN A MANNER THAT IS BEST FOR OTHERS / NO REVENGE
LOOK FOR GOD’S HIGHER PURPOSE IN YOUR LIFE
MAKE DECISION ON GUIDANCE OF HOLY SPIRIT
DO EXACTLY WHAT GOD SAYS TO DO
ANTICIPATE A BLESSING FROM GOD
—————————
This was already a major blessing for me. But to understand why there was an extra nourishment to my soul, it is important to know that I was in a heavy emotional and spiritual slump. How incredible, that my grandfather sent me a “letter” older than I am. In a way, he wrote it just for me before I was even born.
I didn’t get to know my grandfather very well. He passed away when I was nine, long before I developed my love for Scripture and dry sense of humor. I did, however, get to know my grandmother over a course of seventeen years of my life.
Every now and then, I will hear a member of my family say that I remind them a lot of my grandpa. So, logically, I want to get to know him better. Any writing—journal, letter, sermon notes, Bible study notes—would be a way for me to get to know him better without his presence here on earth.
And this, my friends, is why studying the Bible is so important: it is God’s love letter to us. While we are not yet face to face, He reveals His character to us through the Word. If we want to know Him better, we must read what He has given us to read about Himself. If you want to know someone better, read their words. If you want to know God better, read His Word.
